A Rainy-Day Wedding at Carmel Valley Ranch
Documentary moments, paparazzi rain portraits, and so much love
There’s something magical about a rainy wedding day - especially in Carmel Valley. When the clouds roll in and the light softens, everything feels a little more intimate, a little more honest. This wedding at Carmel Valley Ranch was the perfect reminder that the most meaningful images aren’t about perfect weather; they’re about presence, connection, and leaning into whatever the day gives you.
From the very beginning, this celebration felt grounded in emotion. The rain didn’t slow anything down—it simply shifted the mood. The result was a wedding day that felt cinematic, deeply personal, and effortlessly romantic.

Documentary storytelling in the rain
One of the things I love most about documentary-style wedding photography is how it honors real moments as they unfold. On this day, that meant quiet glances under covered walkways, laughter echoing during a drizzle, and hands instinctively finding one another when the rain picked up.
Carmel Valley Ranch lends itself beautifully to this approach. The property’s natural textures—rolling hills, rustic architecture, and winding paths—feel even richer when framed by mist and rain. There’s no need to force anything; the story is already there. My role is simply to observe, anticipate, and preserve it as honestly as possible.

Paparazzi-style portraits with umbrellas & flash
Some of my favorite images from the day happened right in the rain. With an umbrella, a little off-camera flash, and a willingness to embrace the moment, we created portraits that felt bold, playful, and editorial—almost like a stolen moment outside a late-night premiere.
Rain adds movement and atmosphere you simply can’t replicate. The reflections on the ground, the sparkle of droplets caught in flash, the way couples naturally pull closer together—it all creates images that feel alive. These paparazzi-style photos weren’t overly posed; they were a response to the energy of the day, and they ended up being some of the most memorable frames in the gallery.

A day rooted in love (and flexibility)
At its heart, this wedding was about love—unbothered, joyful, and deeply felt. The couple trusted the process, trusted the weather, and trusted that their day would be meaningful no matter what. That openness allowed space for genuine emotion to shine through, from teary vows to spontaneous laughter when the rain surprised everyone.
Rainy wedding days often invite a slower pace. They encourage guests to linger, couples to savor, and moments to unfold naturally. That softness is something I’m always drawn to, both as a photographer and as a storyteller.
